“The Lego 162 Locomotive comes with 210 pieces, and it has no motor. It is a set where you can have it follow behind the train, like we see trains that have two engines on each side to go in two different directions. The set has three different modes it could be in, one is a... More diesel powered train, another would be a passenger wagon, and a steam train. It didn’t really have much purpose, but it is very similar to the creator sets we have today.”

About Trains 4.5V / 12V

In 1972 LEGO released the 4.5V and 12V train sets as part of the Blue Era which was named because of the rail color. These train sets used additional conductor rails mounted between the standard 4.5V rails and 12V motors contained in the same housings as the 4.5V motors, but with additional metal contacts attached to the bottom of the housings.

4.5V / 12V consists of 83 sets that ran from 1972 to 1986. As of today, 7750 Steam Engine with Tender is the most valuable 4.5V / 12V set with an estimated new/factory sealed value of $6,646.

The LEGO train is the only train children can build themselves. There are building instructions in the boxes, but children can also invent new trains of their own design. You can start with the push-train and later on build the LEGO motor into it. Or you can get a train with the battery motor and have it motorized from the start. The most important thing about a LEGO train is that it can always be rebuilt and extended to suit changing ages and interests.
